Gandush

Gandush, also known as oil pulling, is an Ayurvedic therapy where medicated oil or herbal decoction is retained in the mouth for several minutes before spitting it out. The primary aim of this treatment is to remove toxins from the body, especially from the mouth, throat, and digestive system.

Gandush is part of Dinacharya (daily routine) in Ayurveda and is recommended as a preventive measure for maintaining oral hygiene and balancing the doshas. It works by drawing out toxins and impurities from the oral cavity, thereby improving oral health and enhancing digestion, as the mouth is the entry point to the gastrointestinal system.

Benefits of Gandush Treatment

  1. Improves Oral Health

Gandush is an excellent therapy for maintaining oral hygiene. The medicinal oil or liquid used in the treatment helps reduce bacteria in the mouth, preventing issues like cavities, gum disease, bad breath, and tooth decay. It also strengthens the gums, teeth, and jaw.

  2. Detoxifies the Body

According to Ayurveda, the mouth is a gateway for toxins to enter the body. By swishing or holding the medicated oil in the mouth, Gandush helps draw out these toxins, cleansing the body and promoting better digestion. This daily detoxification process boosts energy levels and enhances vitality.

  3. Balances Kapha and Vata Doshas

Gandush is especially effective for individuals with excess Kapha or Vata imbalances. It helps reduce excess Kapha, which is often responsible for issues like mucus accumulation, sluggish digestion, and respiratory problems. It also pacifies Vata, providing relief from dryness in the mouth, throat irritation, and nervous tension.

  4. Enhances Skin Health

By improving digestion and removing toxins, Gandush indirectly supports healthier skin. Many skin issues, such as acne and rashes, are linked to poor digestion or toxin accumulation in the body. Gandush cleanses the digestive system and promotes clearer, more radiant skin.

  5. Relieves Headaches and Migraines

Gandush is also known to help alleviate headaches and migraines, especially those caused by Vata imbalance. The treatment calms the nervous system and reduces stress, which can significantly lower the frequency and intensity of headaches.

The Procedure of Gandush Treatment

The Gandush procedure is simple and can be done at home or in an Ayurvedic clinic as part of a personalized treatment plan. Here’s how a typical Gandush session is conducted:

  • Preparation of the Patient Before starting the Gandush therapy, the patient’s dosha constitution is assessed by an Ayurvedic practitioner. This helps determine the type of oil or herbal decoction that will be used for the treatment. Popular oils used include sesame oil, coconut oil, or specially prepared medicated oils like Irimedadi oil.
  • Warm Oil or Herbal Decoction The oil or herbal decoction is warmed to a comfortable temperature. Warming the oil enhances its therapeutic properties and makes it easier to swish around the mouth. The amount of oil used is usually about 1–2 tablespoons.
  • Swishing or Holding the Oil The patient is instructed to hold the oil or herbal liquid in the mouth without swallowing it. The liquid is kept in the mouth for about 10–15 minutes, during which it absorbs toxins from the oral cavity. The patient gently swishes it around to cover all parts of the mouth, including between the teeth and around the gums.
  • Spitting and Cleansing After the prescribed time, the oil becomes thin and turns milky white, indicating that it has absorbed toxins. The patient then spits out the oil and rinses the mouth thoroughly with warm water to remove any residual toxins. It is important not to swallow the oil, as it contains the impurities drawn out during the process.
  • Post-Treatment Care After Gandush therapy, the patient is advised to rest for a few minutes and avoid eating or drinking for about 30 minutes to allow the oral tissues to heal and restore balance. Herbal gargles or mouthwashes may also be recommended to enhance the cleansing effect.
